Ante Omnia (2022)
Andew Chaiphak
Acrylic on Canvas
60 x 80
This artwork visualizes the exploration of the most fundamental and essential nature of existence, inherent in the Latin title ‘Ante Omnia’ (Above all else). At the center of the frame stands a colossal organo-mechanical structure with tentacle-like limbs, surrounded by an unsettling landscape blending earthy brown, blue, and green tones. The bizarre form of this central entity suggests a transcendent, primal force—a mixture of nature and machine, life and inorganic material. The upper surface of the canvas is adorned with eye-like organs and tangled, bone-like branches, revealing the dual themes of destruction, creation, and surveillance. The large central eye and the tree floating above it seem to symbolize the unchanging vitality and the most important essence (Ante Omnia) that persists even amidst chaos. The intense surreal imagery and unstable palette throughout the work indicate that the artist is attempting to uncover the ultimate, foundational reason for human existence or creation within all this phenomenon and complexity.
