Sailing Between Reality and Imagination

Gid Zim

Floating on Red Waves: The Poet’s Vision in a Realm of Retro Nostalgia and Surreal Dreams
Gid Zim, a contemporary artist from Thailand, explores the ironies of human existence through strange yet familiar symbols. His works often feature figures with blue skin, red-striped clothing, and symbolic objects that traverse sea and sky. These characters appear as divers, pilots, or lone individuals in a crowd, allowing viewers to glimpse the solitude and solidarity of modern life, as well as the anxiety that exists on the border between dreams and reality. In his signature work, Red Fish Airship, a giant red fish floats like a balloon across the sky, carrying human figures and houses — a metaphor for the burdens of urban life, while also infusing surreal humor and fairy-tale charm. Gid Zim’s paintings go beyond mere scene depiction; they metaphorically reveal the fragmented self and social collectivity within us. His red-striped characters each bear distinct expressions, symbolizing the coexistence of diverse emotions and identities in contemporary humans. Through his art, Gid Zim asks: “Are we those who walk beneath the sea, soar through the skies, or merely anonymous figures endlessly lined in a crowd?”
